One comment that was made by the guy in question was 'Stupid spies, smoking is bad for your health' which lead me to think that maybe the smoke particle effect was tweaked on his client to last a really long time, which could make it easier to track spies.

okay

disclaimer i've never used any bloody hacks my knowledge comes mostly from counter-strike and the general internets

i've played way to much counter-strike so i've inevitably come across all manner of hacks
firstly not all hacks are made the same some are of a much greater quality than others

this is mostly true for aimbots basically you have a few types of aimbots
spinhax - i havent seen in teamfortress i they would not work well but in counter-strike basically you spin around really really fast ina circle and ur crosshair stops on all the enemies heads and u fire

aimbot - this one is constantly on and you can tell because the crosshair is spinning around when firing
also note this does not mean that they will just snap to the heads of everyone one after another if it is a good aimbot it can be configured to only snap to a player when the cursor is x far away (x being the variable of how far away they are before it snaps to the person) they can also choose which part of the body it snaps to so its not obvius headshot everytime as well as randomizing it over differnt parts of the body
- note aimbots can be toggled which means that if its bound to say h when the player hits h aimbot will be on if they hit h again it will turn the aimbot off so they are playing legit this is why it is important not to go stupidly and say over mic WHO IS HACKING when you see somebody mention it on admin chat because they will just toggle their hacks off and then you dont really have a way to tell

and then there is no-spray which generaly goes with aimbot no-spray means the hax program corrects basically the spray of your bullets only really aplicable for pistols and heavy mini guns every bullet hits where the crosshair goes - pretty easy to recognize on teamfortress 2 because the crosshair jiggles when it does it which players generally do not do in teamfortress when shooting pistols or minigun as compared to counterstrike where pulling your crosshair down and jiggling it is the norm so its alot harder to get - dont worry about it to much on tf2 because like i said players dont jiggle their crosshairs in team fortress 2

other then that you have wallhacks,
this takes a bloody long time to learn to find out who is wallhacking and not its just alot of bloody practice and learning to figure out if somebody is using wallhacks so ifyou are going ban somebody for them you should probly have multiple demos so it can be proven or disproven

other then that these go along with wallhacks
esp(shows names/healths of all players even through walls)
minimap hacks (shows enemies on the mini-map)
brightsprites ( changes team colors to super bright so they can be seen in dark easier(not to big a worry in tf2)

speedhacks - i havent seen personally but run really fast obviusly

thats all i can think of off the top of my head

but generaly dont assume people are hackers and if you have a strong reason to belive get alot of evidence so you have a strong case and if you dont have evidence the person banned should get the benifit of the doubt until they do it again

and people who are terribad at hacking are obvious to spot

but people who know what they are doing to a large extent are really hard if not impossible to detect

luckly tf2 is not nearly as freindly to hackers as counter-strike is

if you don't mind me reminiscing a little, I remember I saw this super hack one time in SOCOM. He was super fast, had basically no clip, spun, and had a sniper rifle that fired faster than my machine gun. and i got the bugger with a nade. good times.

anyways, i'd like to point out that if the hacking isn't that obvious, then it probably isn't doing that much. umm, i think you know what i mean. the guy wouldn't be doing that much. i'm not saying that makes it okay, but just if you can't tell if someone is hacking or just good, i would assume good.

If you see someone cheating on the servers do you ban and report to Steam or does steam pick it up themselfs????

if someone wants to play with a bunch of ugly crap on the screen just in case they are too blind to see people that anyone else can see without the cheats, fuck it, let em cheat. all that junk on the screen seems like a disadvantage to me.

anyway thanks for the proof dugan, very educational

a few notes on hacks/cheats:
1) There are obvious tells to cheats, if you know what to look for
2) You can hide cheats very well... but it takes skill to hide them as well
3) noobs that download hacks just to be better cant use them well enough to hide them
4) i know people that code hacks (for source games including tf2 and non-source games) --- they do exist, they are real, and they can be undetectable (even in demos to the untrained eye)
5) ive watched people play with hacks enabled (just a wall hack(knowing everyones location) and no aimbot) and the improvment in the player's game is amazing
6) it is possible to "uncloak" spys with hacks
7) i know people taht use hacks in league games and take demos of thoes games and dont get caught

in summary, They exist, they cant always be seen, they suck

steam picks it up them selves and bans them from all tf2/source servers -- but many methods of hacking are undetectable by steam and therefore VAC (valve anit-cheat) sucks. Oh, and there is no method to report hacks (no matter how obvious with demos) to steam.

Yes... I though it was funny the other day when that Joshua guy was so obviously hacking. I went in to report something to VAC, or steam...

and it said... to not report any demos, no matter how obvious, to the VAC center... they'd catch it on their own. Except if they didn't... then they would. Or something like that.

I smell big business. Feels like talking to Medical, or my insurance agent. It'll be covered, unless it isn't... but don't worry about it.

Actually, they're only banned from secure servers.

I have seen some youtube videos of such hacks
ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWVqtzK0zf4
Its pretty fucked up...

I have been accused of hacks quite a few times too... (you know who you are: "FACESTAB WTF!!!111!!!!one")
I have never hacked personally, and have only ever seen a hacker once:
He was the most ridiculous sniper ever, I raged so hard and then I team switched and just stood next to him to watch,
his dot moved really erratically whenever he would see anybody, and otherwise completely at right angles.
He never died and had a huge score... balls were sucked

Its rare to see it because its just a blatant hack but there was a game i played where someone used a speed hack. It was obvious he was using it because he was a pyro that could run faster then a scout. There was also a point where a guy was playing as a heavy. He wasn't on the map, was burning, wasn't in anyones line of site and was getting headshots on me. It even had the picture for a headshot when he killed me. The best part was that when i told him to knock it off, he sayed this:
Hacker: "Dude, did you see me before? I suck"
Me: "Yeah, and now you don't. What the hell? How'd you get instantly good?"

I got no response and he started to suck again >.<

Then of course someone accused me of using an aimbot because i kept sniping them...morons...
