How the access bukkit.org (the answer!)

Post by ammaraskar » Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:20 am

Well some of you who use bukkit.org might have been greeted with this message:
The new IP is: 174.129.154.164

DO NOT JUST USE IT AS A URL. THIS IS FOR PEOPLE WITH A CLUE, SO THEY CAN UPDATE THEIR HOSTS FILE IN THE INTERIM.
If you use it as a URL, then you will not be able to log in!

If you are connected to the new server, you will see "Bukkit can hold DNS!" in the corner which currently displays "Bukkit can hold anything!"
No worries, just follow this guide :)

For Windows:
Go to:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
and open "hosts" with a text editor
Add the following line under "127.0.0.1 localhost"

Code: Select all

174.129.154.164 bukkit.org

For Mac OS:
Open terminal (I assume you know how to do this)
Type

Code: Select all

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts
Enter your password when prompted
Insert this line under "127.0.0.1 localhost"

Code: Select all

174.129.154.164 bukkit.org
press control-o to save the file and control-x to close the editor
On Leopard you can issue a simple Terminal command to flush the DNS cache, and have your host file changes to take immediate effect:

Code: Select all

dscacheutil -flushcache
If you aren't on leapord, restart your computer

Ikri - About to head home now. If I'm not back in Eugene in 10 hours, it's probably because we hit a deer and the deer won, or lost, depending on how you look at the situation. Ouch.
Neelpos - If it's still alive after the collision slit its throat for messing up your car, then drink its blood to gain its power.

Manualy setting your hosts file should only be done by those knowing what the fuck they are doing.

and you need to be admin, and have ownership... 2 more thing you don't teach to retards (said in a humorously british voice with a thick layer of sarcasm, something like the voice of yahtzee would be fitting)

plenty of complicated computer things have become commonplace since minecraft. it will only further the insecurity of the interwebs.
Magnus: This questionnaire is invalid as there is no comedy option. Please revise and resubmit for approval.
King_Fluffy: They're all minecraft servers, they're all comedy options.
