Pirate Act Promises P2P Wiretaps and Fed. Lawsuits

Post by Cc_Hairy » Thu May 27, 2004 4:31 pm

The Pirate Act currently in the Senate would let federal prosecutors file civil lawsuits against suspected copyright infringers. Fines would range from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The law will deliver tens of thousands of new criminal fines and new criminal convictions.

Wiretaps will be sought by the Justice Department to collect evidence about P2P infringement. The Justice Department would receive millions of dollars to develop a specialized unit. "Tens of thousands of continuing civil enforcement actions might be needed to generate the necessary deterrence," Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah.

i think this would all be simplified if we just instituted the death penalty for all crimes.

Man we have better things to spend cash on. What is up with this civil suit thing? Is it so that the accused cannot get a lawyer? This law is so fucked up it's stupid. Civil suits WTF. Prosecutors should not be able to do that.
