How big is your Steam folder?

Post by Wolsk » Fri Aug 24, 2012 5:05 pm

I'm running low on space on my computer, and I decided to see how much of it is taken up by Steam. Right click on the Steam folder and view the properties (in case you don't know how to see the size). Look at "size" rather than "size on disk" and post the number here. Mine is 174 GB on a 500 GB laptop.

8.61 gb.

Do i get an award for smallest steam folder?

I long ago realized how much space steam takes up when i have many games installed. I try to keep it to a minimum now.
In some other time and space, I found time for a new signature.

114 and 64. I have 2 steam folders because I don't need all that on my SSD. I don't give a shit how long some games take to load.

Mine is only 86 GB at the moment (just reformatted recently).

My SSD is only ~83GB formatted. (SO HOW DO I HAVE SO MUCH IN MY STEAM FOLDER???? Solution below.)

First I have my steamapps "folder" on my SSD, but it's actually a symbolic link to a folder on my fat HDD.
Since most games don't benefit significantly from SSD's practically speaking (TF2, CS:S, etc) this is at no cost.
Then, within my steamapps/* folder(s), I have symbolic links back to my SSD for games that benefit from SSD's. (like Skyrim, etc)
That way huge folders like "maps" for various games (TF2 etc) don't waste precious SSD space,
all while I still get all the practical benefits from my SSD for games that effectively make use of SSD's.
Steam still works perfectly too, as far as it knows it's all one simple folder ;)

Best of both worlds, and my SSD still has tonnes of space left.

Also, it really only took 10 minutes effort to figure out and implement, so it's retardedly easy:

Code: Select all

mklink /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps" "D:\steamapps"
mklink /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps_on_SSD\Skyrim"
and similar
(for large values of 2)
