all my mother's family had was a small farm they had to give up, as well as ten years of my grandfather's life because labour camp where he was tortured and actually made infertile due to extensive damage to the testes - one torture method was jumper cables to the sack, actually. All for not abandoning his family and home to fight in a revolution that was already winning across the island with no weapons or experience. Cuba isn't just Havana. my mother lived in the fuckin' boonies and starved. they were never well-off, but after the revolution, with the loss of their property and father (the skilled one capable of bringing in food at the time) they were forced to resorting to eating anything, from mice to rags. ever heard of ropa vieja? the story behind that isn't just a legend.

and im all for socialism, fuck, I'm red as hell, but fidel's regime tortured, killed, and imprisoned like the rest of them - yes, to fascist pigs and plenty of cunts who deserved it, but also to quite a few who didn't. yeah, this happens in war. these things aren't clean, aren't pretty. I get that. but my grandfather, my family, was innocent, and that shit doesn't sit well with me.

and for that, I find it difficult to glorify the cunt in anyway possible. it may not be the most sound reason in some people's eyes, but it's personal, so fuck it. fucker can rot in whatever hell he finds himself in.

but yeah, as an outsider - well, even as an insider, you can keep whatever opinion you want, that's cool. variety of opinion and viewpoint, especially controversial ones that we as a class have to work together to mellow out and understand each other on, as well as the ability to freely express them, are what make this country great. so let's do that. you want revolution? you want real change? stick together, don't divide. work around our differences. unite as a class and show up as a team.

nah, they were down for socialism for sure. my gramps actually really disliked the american influence of cuba at the time and was totally down to oust batista and the US.

he wasn't, however, down for abandoning his rural family of a wife and five kids while he was the only man around capable of farming and sustaining the family to go to war across the island while there were plenty of other, younger, better volunteers

and I wouldn't be either, in his situation

being promised a revolution and a freedom from oppression and being given a prison camp away from his family for ten years really soured his grapes though

side note that they came for him in '60, two years after the revolution ended successfully
