it's official: FFXIV is the MMO for Casual Gamers™

over the past 2 weeks all the beta testers and the FFXIV community have been arguing about a new fatigue system - how it works, what it means for the game, etc. but the developers never said anything so it was all rumor.

well today the project manager clarified what it is:

you can only play a class for 8 hours a week at normal (100%) xp rate. after that it gradually worsens to 0% (cap) at 15 hours a week. that's for 1 class - you can play all of the classes 8 hours a week each. this is specifically to make sure casual gamers (his words) aren't at a disadvantage to hardcore gamers.

welp that's one less game i have to worry about buying or playing. i can't believe they want to kill their biggest project in their company's history, because that's surely what will come out of this.

i think i mentioned this in another thread but i canceled my pre-order. i wasn't really liking the tone of the game anyway and this is just the last straw. no WAY am i getting into an MMO where i can't play for 16 hours a day. what would be the point?

I think this is retarded. Why punish those who want to play more just because there's some people out there who don't play as much? That's like if you were to work 40 hours and someone was to work 20 hours, you'd still make the same pay. I don't see how they see this being a good idea at all.

Yeah, this is really stupid. I mean, I can see what they're going for with this... even if you only had about 10 or 12 hours to play in a week, you could keep one class leveled sufficiently to keep up with your buddies that might play for over 40 hours a week.

But still, it's incredibly stupid to put hard limits on what people are allowed to do within the game like this. Limits and punishment are generally never a fun thing in any game.

There are more casual gamers than hardcore gamers, if they can get casual gamers on the monthly payment plan, then it is worth the loss of some hardcore.

Look at WoW, there are alot of casual gamers there... I know a few people where that's the only game they have ever really played.

I think it might be some twisted way to make money. If you're playing a monthly fee but not using their servers/bandwidth they are making 100% profit. If, by this system, they limit peoples usage they are making a huge profit by not having to pay for servers and bandwidth. It seems like something they would do...
