Epic Mafia

Mafia is a game of psychology that was introduced in 1986 in Moscow State University. It started off very simply, with basic roles such as villager and mafia. The mafia were the informed minority and the village was the uninformed majority. Although there are other roles, the basic premise of an informed minority versus an uninformed majority remains.

Epic Mafia is a live mafia site created in January of 2008. It is played real-time, using a live chatting and voting system.

At the start of the game each player is secretly assigned a role affiliated with one of these teams. The game has two alternating phases: "night", during which the mafia may covertly "murder" an innocent, and "day", in which surviving players debate the identities of the mafiosi and vote to eliminate a suspect. Play continues until all of the mafia has been eliminated, or until the mafia outnumbers the innocents.

The rules and roles are fairly easy to learn, however, the game theory and psychological aspects of Mafia are where the more complex elements of it's gameplay shine. I figured that if enough people were interested in the game and willing to try it out, like Cards Against Humanity - this could be a new party game for the j2ers of the Mumble server.

We played a couple of fun games last night on the Mumble server. Turns out Neel is even more of a backstabbing bastard in Epic Mafia than Age of Empires II.

Would love to get another game going soon and possibly with more people!

For those who are without context, there's a mafia role called Fabricator that can choose to give a person a fake gun that backfires and a town role called Gunsmith that can choose to give a person an actual gun.

The person with the gun can choose to shoot someone during the day and Pikachu.., well, needless to say, he did not choose wisely.
