racism
a lot of white people in the US don't think racism still exists. i even know people like this here in san francisco. even though studies constantly show racism is still popular all over the country. i just read about a new one: a guy wrote to various people in congress, using fake names that sounded white or black. the black names were ignored (no reply) from both democrats and republicans much more often than the white fake names
specifically 56% overall response rate, but 60% replied to "jake" and only 55% replied to "deshawn," a difference of 5%. but republicans were 8% less likely to respond, possibly because they assume a black person will always vote for a democrat anyway.

so yeah, racism.

everybody sees the obvious differences.
There is no way around that.
Everybody of every "race" does it, no exceptions.
I think it is best just to accept our differences and make friends with everyone.
That is my take, if you don't look down on people based on their race, then it is not a big deal.

Re: racism
http://www.economics.harvard.edu/facult ... 2B2011.pdfA new study of capital sentences handed down in first degree murder cases finds evidence of racial bias against minority defendants who killed white victims.
For Habeas Corpus cases involving a minority defendant, the error rate was 37.5 percent if the victim was white, and 28.4 percent if it was not white, with a statistically significant difference of 9 percentage points.

I don't know why people try to debate this topic, yes it will always exist, and nothing anyone says will change that, in my opinion.
Re: racism
could racism be considered simply "partially believing" common stereotypes?
There's perfectly understandable reasons as to why they wouldn't listen to those letters- however, while I think they are bogus reasons, they may be different from necessarily "racism"?
For a number of reasons, a large % of black kids do very poorly in school. From my understanding, this has nothing to do with their skin color but all to do with the current culture, with the rolemodels, famous people, etc that they aspire to be, and honestly, a bad start since slavery and segregation. Since thug gangsters became the ideal for many black kids, they are set up for failure. Not to mention the amount of single mothers and such.
With that said, these senators know this and, playing off the stereotypes, choose to ignore people who they assume will be less educated. Racism? If you define it as that, then yeah. I definitely think it's wrong, whether considered racism or not

Re: racism
racism is learned, it's not part of being human. there have been plenty of cultures free of racism in the past and present.
generally it exists because the ruling class uses it to keep the working class distracted. it's not natural human nature. tribalism/xenophobia is to a degree but that's not the same thing as hating all black people
