What is the only constant in the existence of the universe?

Post by dyl1138 » Thu Sep 15, 2011 12:15 am

Space is big. Really big. You won't believe how vastly, greatly, mindbogglingly big it is
- the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

Now, many people will give mature answers, meditate, obsess, and/or commit suicide over this question: what is the only constant in the universe? It happens more time than the amount of combined atoms in the universe. Change is my answer. Thoughts? Other answers? Taxes and death are creative but obviously susceptible to change. I WILL nitpick on your answer, more than likely.

How about decay? Everything eventually breaks down into a smaller form until you reach the atomic level, right? This isn't really my area so I'm just throwing it out there.

Actually light is affected by gravity, so it's not always going the exact same speed.

Thanks for shedding some light on that issue, Neelpos.

change/decay can be rolled into one big ball of second law of thermodynamics
speed of light is determined by its medium (ie. faster in a vacuum, slower in water)
i'm going to go with energy/matter, since they are interchangable

These jokes are making me feel light-headed.

And dyl, you can't even be sure that change is a constant.
Keep in mind that we might not even exist.

Someones mind just got changed. Also isn't matter just energy? I don't really understand why people still separate them.

why do you suggest does there need to be "only" one constant?

and why do you suggest anything is constant at all?

seems to me the question is flawed
