Is money necessary for the human race?

Post by dyl1138 » Thu Sep 15, 2011 12:25 am

This is a interesting one I thought up shortly after my previous topic. It boils down to this: if money no longer existed, would we survive as a species? I have little insight on this, I am completely mindboggled and looking for mature opinions, perhaps even some insight from a high school dropout. We could die without money. It's like tobacco in many respects but is WORSE. it causes all evil now.
Nothing is free except the grace of god.
- True Grit( the remake 2011)
Once we learned to trust each other to take responsibilities like hunter, or car builder, we would survive healthier and kill the cancer that threatens our society, our very existence. I say yes.

I think the human race has the potential to not need money, but at its current state I think most people would just freak. So no, not yet, humanity needs to grow up a little first.

but the key idea here that must be kept in mind is that money was developed as a means of facilitating trade
to do away with cash, one must first eliminate capitalism

we already have enough "things" (water, rice, furniture, etc.) for everyone on the planet. the daily conflict of human life exists because some people have more things than they need and don't give it to others unless they work for them.

humans, genetically identical to us, lived for 100,000 years without money. if humans had been alive for only one day, starting at midnight and right now was midnight 24 hours later, we were hunter-gatherers until 11:54 PM - we only started settling down and using agriculture and building cities in the last 6 minutes

so obviously money is not necessary for the human race

It is not necessary, but a little research into history will tell you that it will not go away. Or if it did, a new currency would take its place.

How else would you be able to track whether or not someone owes you something?

Earliest domestic societies would use marks in clay to signify they had borrowed something or owed something to someone else. That is the basis of money, it is a little more abstract today however, but same principle.

Thanks nightwolf, I'm enjoying the amount of good ideas people are having. Now, we would rely on trust since money and wanting caused by having more than you need( money mostly) would be gone. We would all learn to cooperate or leave. Wars will be less deadly against others since of the lack of guns if we all can stand each other long enough. Money is a cancer though, and friendly trade leads to groups of trader, of which one dominates, leads to walmart 2. There's also the mutant slime step before walmart, but that's evolution for you. These are very anti republic ideas, but I am a patriot not a communist. And a democrat. But giving up money is a long way along our path. Money is the source of all evil is perhaps a bit farfetched though.

Well considering we procreate and there is not "survival of the fittest" mentality within the human race, we use another way to keep our population amount under control more or less: money. The ones who have it survive, the ones who don't, don't survive.

It's crude, but that's how it is. Not saying I like that situation though but we can't change it can we.

Assholes die if they aren't willing to adjust. Being one without money mean less courtesy to yourself. The mentality of survival of the fittest has only adapted to include: shit ain't free bitch. Taking money out of that would only strenghen the meaning.

I like the idea of the venus project and a world without money but they all kind of rely on a global revolution, and I cant imagine that happening in any of our life times.

the guys with the most money din't get it for free
they got it by:
a) being the biggest asses they can be and fucking other people over
b) controlling resources, the means to make something, all that shit

removing money wouldn't remove the fact that they're wealthy

their wealth would just be expressed differently
instead of "hey that guy has 30 bajillion $, if you want some work for him" it would be "hey that guy controls 90% of the farmland around here, if you want some work for him"

and like it or not, but assholes hold the most power atm
a revolution won't happen without them resisting

and before you answer "they might be wealthy, but we have numbers!", there will always be people willing to work for them
and they have the fancy equipment

I think that we need to go BACK before money is no longer an issue. 10,000 years ago, humans were just like any other animal. (More advanced, granted. But we still lived In 'groups' and hunted for food)
We had no need for money back then. But now, In this age of technology and governments, money is part of day-to-day life.

it is settled then. most people agree:
1. it cant happen now, certainly not overnight.
2. a long time from now (fowards or backwards) it is likely and easier.
3. assholes reign supreme
am i missing anything?
