any known method for decompiling map files?
i know how to get the model files out of tf2 and the rest of the source games, but is there any way to get the .bsp files to export into .obj, .3ds, .c4d or similar? a google search didn't turn anything up, but i just thought i would see if anyone here knows a trick or two.

you *can* decompile .bsp files, but what you end up with (i believe) is a messy approximation of the original .vmf.
What are you trying to accomplish?

i'm trying to get the basic model of the level for some higher quality renderings. i can do this with the model files, but i don't really want to spend the time to recreate entire levels. i can do texturing easily enough, but that much raw modeling i don't have time for.

You can extract the compiled models and materials from the bsp, but you can't get the source files for those models, if that's what you're asking.

so, if i can't get the source for the models, does that just simply mean there will be no props? if so i can deal with that. mainly what i am looking for is the landscape, buildings, textures, etc...

ok, so i found VMEX and figured that out, but textures weren't carried over.
is there a way to do this or am i going to have to take care of it manually?

I don't believe what you're looking for exists.
Decompiling the map will result in a map source file. And pretty much all you can do with that AFAIK is load it in Hammer or compile it.
What exactly is it that you're trying to do?

essentially, this:
but with textures.
i am able to get this far with pretty much any community map, the premade ones are a bit tougher because somehow the hitboxes and custom terrain get intermingled.

It seems to me you'd have a much easier time taking screenshots in the game.

at least not until DirectX 27 is released.
