very lucky for you that you got a warning instead of an offer to pay $3000 or get sued.

They can't do anything, joe. All that they will do is send a warning to your ISP at max, and if you're warned a few times from your ISP, they will shut down your internet.

why can't they do anything? they own the show, they apparently know he downloaded it. that's enough to file a suit, which would cost him a lot more than $3000.

It would cost them more in lawyer fees than they could get out of him. Why would they waste their time and money on some small guy who downloaded a few episodes when they could go for the people who pirate and sell hundreds of their shows?

any corporation has in-house counsel that can send out letters all day without costing a dime.
Why would they waste their time and money on some small guy who downloaded a few episodes when they could go for the people who pirate and sell hundreds of their shows?
explain that to the RIAA, who have been threatening to sue thousands of people for years unless they pay $3000. i'm sure you've heard about it, it's been mentioned online on just about every website i go to.

I get those for TV shows...ironically they are for the ones I buy on iTunes to watch, but then I don't own an AppleTV so I download it in another format to stream to my 360.

Ah, well they catch you with programs such as Kazaa or Limewire. I've yet to see a torrent case that has stood any ground, ending up with the RIAA winning.

they've busted people for running torrenting sites and i think a few people have been busted for seeding major releases but i think youre right, i dont remember hearing about any casual torrent user getting busted. however if they had enough info to send him a letter, i don't see why they didn't just throw in a settlement at the same time. i guess that's why i'm not a lawyer :)

Well the thing is that people have been using the "someone else downloaded it from my wireless internet" card a lot, and it's been working.
