Black maps/other problems

Post by Grndslmhttr3 » Wed Dec 26, 2007 5:14 pm

A lot of the maps I play on (mainly 2fort) are basically 75% black. Is this normal, or do I need to do something?

As for the "other problems", I get a decent amount of FPS lag, and it's starting to get on my nerves. On some servers, even the third lowest (default) resolution gives me fps lag. I want to use the next higher one, but on almost all maps, it lags. Is there anything I can do about that? (if possible, for free? If not, please post your suggestion anyway.)
Thanks.

Under options/video tab there is an "Adjust brightness" button. Any luck with that?

And Mad_Dugan, I'll try that.

Definitely not a brightness problem.
In the steam menu:
right click on TF2 > properties > Local Files > Verify Game Cache Files

See if that fixes it.

Probably not the brightness, it looks like textures are missing, so might try verifying file integrity via steam and if nothing is found there, try the following command line options

-dxlevel 80

What video card are you using?

EDIT: Follow what Mr. Blip suggests. :)

wouldn't missing textures either turn them into pink checkerboards?

I was referring to the fact that there is no evidence of the texture there, not that the file was missing, but the engine thought there was something to work with, but ended up just drawing black.

One other thing to try is update your video card driver.

I figured that would mean a shader problem

Hmm, the "verify game cache files" didn't work.

Could it be my ram (for the fps lag)? It's at 99% during the duration of my time playing TF2. All the time.
My video card is an nvidia GeForce 6800.

If you set everything to its lowest setting in advance video settings, does the blackness go away?

Again, make sure you have the latest video driver.

Well I called Dell about my video card, not to see if it should be upgraded, but because the cooling fan doesn't work. They're sending someone out to replace it this Friday or Saturday.
Would that be the source of some lag, and would it allow me to increase the resolution a bit?

Yes. Hardware will run much slower and "lag" if it gets too hot.
