Is the only way to gain cards by buying them in the market? If so how do the first people get foil cards?

You get them from drops. Foils are rare drops.

yup. Foil cards are super rare and expensive cause they're a rare drop as is, and you can only get them if level 10 or higher.

IIRC, half the total number of cards in the set.

I didn't realize that it's that amount of drops period and gave some away. =/
