Thoughts? He's the first American author to win since Toni Morrison, is there anyone in America you think deserved it more? How about international authors? Also, lots of people are debating whether lyricists should even qualify for the prize. How do you feel?

Ahem..... Long post, kinda got carried away ,but bear with me
Lyricism essentially equates to poetry ,and many authors have attained the prize due to their contributions in the aforementioned art form.
Now you have to consider that when it comes to the literature prize, the judging criteria, unlike most other categories, doesn't neccessarily have to be based on the most recent output that individual/artist ,but on works that have had an historical and cultural impact. And that the artist/individual work has keep their relevance to this day ,or have maintained consistency during his/her career.
Example, a very decorated and famous Nobel Literature Prize winner ,Gabriel Garcia Marquez, won the prize in 1982 for his work 100 Years of Solitude, published in 1967. In other words, it took more almost 20 years for his work/contribution to literature to be aknowledged ,eventhough he kept writting stuff after that.
I don't know what is the current's generations view on Bob Dylan in 2016 ,but back in the 60's he was at the avantguard of counter-culture of the decade. Everything from civil rights movement to the vietnam wars is encompassed in his career as a lyricist.

For sure, there are tons of other authors in America and elsewhere in the world that equally deserve the prize ,but still him winning the prize rectifies the culture and generation associated with him by the intellectual community who are either too old, or too young to appreciate the work. In a way like the passing of the torch.
This being an indispensable synecdoche on what intellectuals and writters of history use as a judging basis of what we consider cultural progress.
