If you feel like your save doesn't have enough ores:

I give you - MINEPLUMP!
MinePlump is a program that will find mineral veins in an existing Minecraft Alpha level and, well, plump them. There are a few tunable parameters, so play around with things until you think you are getting a good result.
Still not dead.
