Capture the Flag

Post by RideTheWalrus » Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:25 am

I'm going to embark on creating a prototype of a capture the flag sort of map.

Basically a good sized area. Probably 100x100~200x200. with a line in the middle defining which sides are which. With a red block for one flag, and a blue for the other.

The way it is played, is you can use anything within the area to win. So if you build a base around your flag, using resources that you found within the map, such as wood, dirt, sand, etc... that's fine. But the first to 3 wins. As soon as I finish it, I'll post pictures, maybe even videos here.

I'm not good at writing mods, or wiring red stone. So there will be no real way to govern the game other than multiple referees for cheating. But in seeing in how this is a prototype, for just getting it made, etc... it will be fine.

The there will be a referee at each goal holding 3 of that colors block. Upon a start, the referee will place the block on the corresponding side.

After you die, you're eliminated from play, which can also make this a last man standing kind of game, but that's just 2 birds with one stone. :)

If you have any suggestions on how to improve upon this, post here please. I'll take any help I can get.

Sounds awesome. I have no input, it seems great the way it is.

If it is going to be in mc4, it will take a bit longer than mc2.

The map is all we need. There are already ctf mods for servers (albeit poorly implemented). The map size sounds right. Maybe you could have forests behind each of the flag spots like this:

TREES[][]FLAG[][][][][][][][][][][][]FLAG[][]TREES

that way people can make tools, but they can't camp there cause they can't defend their flag from back thurr.

I was planning on doing something like this, roughly. There will be trees, water, and if you dig far enough maybe lava. But I'm starting on the map today, now mind you it will be a VERY rough prototype. The first working map will be much greater.

I was thnking of having a giant wall where the red line is.
That way, the teams can't see how the other team is defending.
The wall can drop and turn into the line when the match starts.
I know exactly how this can be done of you want it, Wally.
What server is it on, and where will it be?

You provide the map, and I can write ctf code.

(Take your time, I'm on vacation \o/)

PURELY TESTING/BETA STAGES

Hopefully the map will work, if any problems arise, let me know.

I did it in single player to avoid griefing, and maybe just have this on its own server all together.

And feel free to add/remove things that you find necessary.

Not sure if this problem will arise or not, but I'm not sure if the spawn is at the actual arena. If not just tell me, and I'll try to find it. And just give directions to it.

If it's anything like Source Forts, then I'll like it.

Have a 15 minute build phase, then a combat phase where you capture the flag.

During the build phase players start with only diamond tools and build their base out of natural resources.

In the combat phase, players cannot place blocks and try to capture the flag.

Use beds for team spawn points.

Well I'm starting to think that having a build then fight time is a good idea, but I don't want it to be just running back and forth. I want it to be like having underground tunnels, building bridges, etc... as for starting with diamond tools though, I'll say I won't have to agree. I think that the teams should have to use every resource available. So I may try to get something to work where a wall just gets pulled underground or something. Or if Bax wants to, a plug-in where I type Start and the wall disappears.

Things I would like to see in the next version of this map:
  • Bedrock walls and floor. Floor probably like 6 blocks down from the lowest ground level
  • Kill feed (wish we could get this for mc3 and mc4)
  • I wanna see some pools of water or lava
Bax is very capable of making a script where a wall appears and disappears every 5 minutes. There should also probably be a 10 second warning so nobody gets stuck in the wall, but details can be worked out later.

I would hate if this area had a roof. And there should probably be a server plugin that disables names so people can sneak around on hills.

Great job so far, the map seems to have a good flow.
