It looks like a new realm. Look at the ground, the obsidian towers and how dark everything is. (No moon/stars) ALso: there are no mobs OTHER than endermen.

it looks like sand and large cactus. Most of Notch's screenshots are very very dark, remember the inital screens of the enderman?

I'm 100% sure that those pillars are Obsidian. Look closely. And the ground has a swirly pattern on it. See it?

From the bottom left pillar, purple particles are emerging like the kind seen coming from a nether portal D:

I think speculation is that this is the Enderworld or something. I noticed the grain before I noticed the darkness/new blocks.

Makes sense because that dark "goop" portal material block (119, I think) added didn't look like what an Aether Realm or whatever portal would look like.
