well if their crashing us then they could be using a Denial of Service virus to try and shutdown the server, and I've seen it happen to alot of stuff lately. And actually there has been alot of Denial of Service viruses going on.

Most Minecraft player's threatening to "DDoS" a server proably found LOIC, saw someone on Youtube using it or just thought they would say it to "scare" the players on the server.
Anyway, those with the knowledge to use LOIC would need to use thousands of computers across different networks to cause any real harm. Not to mention they would most likely fuck up their router in doing so...
On the off chance that it did actually happen, they wouldn't get far, most hosting providers are ready for that sort of thing and would shut the "DDoS" down quickly with minimal downtime.
