CD vs. DLC

Post by FoxTails12 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 11:23 pm

One of the biggest debates of our time (other than guncontrol) is weather to buy a game through Steam XBLA PSN etc. or getting the retail box from a store.

Lets hear what you have to say.

Is this honestly a debate? I don't know anybody who buys physical copies of PC games anymore, and if they do they're grade-A chump meat.

Even if you decide to buy a physical copy of a game, you are more than likely going to download large patches for the game because of bug-fixes or content updates. Having to stand in line or wait for a game to come back in stock is such a pain in the ass. It's so much easier to click a button and watch the magic happen. The only real advantage I could see to buying a physical is if you have limited bandwidth, but then again if you are buying pc games you are most likely going to want to play them online as well.

I think the debates over.

Might as well go out and buy a physical copy, since we already picked you out an outfit to impress the gamestop employees http://forums.joe.to/viewtopic.php?f=152&t=69954

I guess you can buy digital if you wanna support steams DRM and never being able to hold your game in your arms.

I don't usually cuddle with my games so I think I'll go with digital copies.

I always go Digital, last Physical copy I got was HL2, just because.
I prefer Digital, it can't get scratched or lost, easier to manage.

Yeah, I'm cool with that, PC game boxes are significantly less magical than they used to be. It's a waste of packaging and recording resources at this point, quite frankly, and not something I wish to contribute part of my purchase to or commit space to in my home.

You could also buy from GOG, Amazon, or GMG if you're honestly that worried about Steam's DRM and the hypothetical world-ending event that would put them out of business and leave you without access to your games.

When was the last time you bought a game on disk for PC/Mac?

For me, it was the Orange box back in 2007. Digital Copies ftw

Gabe said himself that, in the event Steam goes under or something happens that would compromise the ability to play the games you paid for though steam becoming unavailable there would be a removal of DRM locks on all of the steam games in your library. Further more, the steam service would continue to operate even if valve became non-existent.
steam forums wrote:However, Gabe Newell posted on the forum ("off the record") several years ago saying that he cannot think of a situation where they wouldn't release a patch removing steam from all the games (which they've tested and it works). Unfortunately I believe that the post in-question has been pruned.
Considering Gabe Newell himself doesn't even like the idea of DRM I feel pretty confident buying all my games from steam. It is a fantastic service, zero clutter, I always have access to the games I want, wherever I want.

I've met people who insist on always getting titles from retail for the sake of it.. but when it just redirects them to get the game via a steam key then they end up pirating the game out of principle.. like the idea is if you buy something you will always own it and be able to install it immediately - on a cd
edit: whoops didnt read all posts.. points addressed
