Parasyte,
I've been meaning to ask you this for a while- why Magritte for your icon? It's an interesting choice.

Re: Trading Thread
I'm a big fan of surrealism; this extends to Dadaism and even a bit of Avant-garde. Back in college I endured countless hours of art history and a number of my projects began gravitating towards those styles in one form or another. The juxtaposition of abstract ideas and concepts tickles me. Much of Magritte's work also utilizes very simple imagery which appeals to me as a graphic designer; the world of design is a constant challenge to do more with less.bloodcrow wrote:why Magritte for your icon? I typically enjoy any artist whose work makes you think differently about normal, everyday things. Magritte, Dali, Yerka and even Escher. Although Escher's work isn't surrealism per se, it is in the same neighborhood. I love his presentation of impossibilities through simple objects and architecture.
As to why I chose the Son of Man specifically, the design makes for a great avatar and I enjoy that Magritte painted it as a self-portrait. You see only as much as he wants to show you; I think that's a great symbol for the online community as a whole. Who we are online is not necessarily who we are in real-life.
TL;DR
For those who were hoping for a simpler answer: I like pretty pictures
Re: Trading Thread
Interesting and compelling observations. My minor was art history (major in painting w/ emphasis on watercolors and gouache). I know this is totally off thread from trading. I hope no one minds. My gravitation was towards the first school of abstract expressionism.
For me, it was the absolute removal of concrete concepts and ideas and distilling it down to the pure essence of composition. There is no personal value that i inject into these works unlike a landscape or lyrics in my music (which i can discuss some other time and in another thread. About 90% of the music i buy now has no lyrics), i don't take literal objects in those compositions (visual elements or in the case of lyrics) and inject my personal interpretations.
Having said that, my appreciation for artists run the gamut from the profound nature of the drawings in Lasceaux, the textiles, woodworking and bonework of Native Americans, quilting, and all sorts of traditional art, architecture and product design. But my gravitation is towards abstract expressionism and modern expressionism. My heroes include Franz Kline, Cy Twombly, Helen Frankenthaler and Jackson Pollock among MANY others.
I didn't "get" Pollock for the longest time. Then one day in the Houston Museum of Modern Art, i backed up and pressed against something hard (and it wasn't a hot date off of Craigslist). I turned and came face to face with a small painting by Pollock. I was riveted to the spot. Seeing his work in reproductions cannot do justice. Each color had a rhythm and layering each of these on top of one another was simply breathtaking.
Oh- i had backed against the glass shield in front of it. Pollock was notorious for using incompatible paints so there was a tray and glass front to make sure anything that fell off could be put back on.
