From what I understand:
Some game devs loved Renegade so much they made a UT3 mod of it. It was fairly well received, so they talked with EA and worked out some deal that they could release a standalone Renegade game using the UT3 engine, but they can not make any money off of it, not even donations. It looks like a slightly modernized Renegade, with the core gameplay elements still intact.
Renegade was based off of the original C&C game. All structures and units are pulled from there.
You have a base, the enemy has a base. Each structure in the base has its own functionality (power, vehicles, advanced infantry, resource income, base defense on some maps). You can destroy structures in the enemy base to take that functionality away from them. There are basic infantry that are always available and they do not cost credits to use. Each team also has a beacon that summons their super weapon (ion cannon/nuke) The game is over when all structures are destroyed, time limit is over, OR on some maps (usually official maps only) when a beacon is successfully activated on a pedestal, usually located in some central structure in the base.
Super Weapon beacons: these generally cost the most, must be placed (takes a few seconds to place), and they emit some kind of notice that they have been placed and begin to beep pretty loudly. It takes some time for the actual nuke or ion cannon to be called in, so the defending team has plenty of time to find it and defuse it. Each person can only carry one. You usually either need to place a bunch of them, or heavily defend it until it goes off.
You automatically accumulate resources over time to spend on vehicles or advanced infantry. Your refinery has a harvester that goes out and harvests tiberium. When it returns to the refinery, you get a lump sum. If the harvester is destroyed, your vehicle building automatically generates a new one a few minutes later.
Some maps have flying vehicles.
The game can be very back and forth, or it can snowball pretty hard. Watch the first 15-20 minutes of the last video in the OP for a good idea of what the game is like.
