Microsoft purchases Minecraft studio for 2.5 billion

Mojang, creators of block-building game Minecraft, have been purchased by Microsoft for a cool 2.5 billion dollars.

In a post on the official Mojang blog, Chief Word Officer Owen Hill stated that "Yes, the deal is real." Hill went on to state that the three founders, Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving the company to work on different projects. He also wanted to assure users that "Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development." Many have speculated that the purchase is to help boost Windows Phone sales.

All points aside, I am really happy for Notch and the rest of the Mojang employees, they got really lucky with a cool idea. The success of this game can also be attributed in no small part to the great communities of players and developers (such as ourselves) who were given free reign to expand on the basic ideas of the game. I personally saw Minecraft as more of a medium, a platform for individuals and groups to create unique experiences. I am unsure of what Microsoft will do with this game, but I certainly enjoyed playing it for the last couple of years.

Pretty much all of Minecraft's success came from Mojang communicating with the community about future updates and such. If Microsoft doesn't keep that up, they will prolly kill Minecraft, which will also be bad for the LPers who live off making Minecraft YouTube videos. Either way, Minecraft was one of the biggest indie game success stories ever, and I respect Mojang for what they've accomplished.

Let's see where things go from here. :v

And where did you find this? :P Seems like bullshit, considering the original purchase agreement is for the game (which includes MP) and future updates.

You're really missing out. You owe it to yourself to watch the entire thing.

Thank god. Maybe this will finally kill it and people can go back to playing with legos instead of virtual legos.

You can tell how pissed off they're getting as the questions go on and on

*Sigh* ... The old days of Minecraft Alpha <1.0.15
Multiplayer had no monsters or objective, just blocks and space.

I actually thought all mobs until beta 1.5 were pretty nifty, especially dogs. The Nether used to be scary and just a tad more difficult.
