I'm talking about this which works just like a normal folder. If winrar is faster I dunno. But "instantly" has always been fast enough for me.

Try opening a zip file that is a few gigabytes large. It normally takes some time, when WinRAR opens it instantly.

Usually I just setup a few things.

Firefox and Thunderbird are always first. Along with essential drivers.
Kaspersky Internet Security 6 for all that mumbo jumbo
I use iTunes, I don't care to have alternatives that the originals almost always do much better. (AKA Trillian, GAIM) I stick with Windows Live Messenger, a couple of months ago I stopped using AIM.

All of my games I currently have been playing go on.

I am actually not too fond of having sooo many of those utility type softwares.

Oh and POWERARCHIVER for the win. Seriously it does it all and so much better than winzip or winrar.

Not so Windowsish
knoppix boot disk, linux installed on a cd, easy to use, comes with memtest86(checks for bad RAM) boot option.
dban boot disk, full hard drive wipe, easy to use

Main windows user name is "user", good for privacy, changing it isn't enough, you need to do this on creation of the user account, real name is "user" when doing non important registrations

bios on-boot password, be very careful when setting this =)

ontrol panel > system > adv > preformace settings >>
Branch1 > Visual Effects > Adjust for best preformance
Branch2(Window XP SP2 only) > Data Execution Protection > DEP for all programs except (causes some a % increase in cpu usage but increases security, may cause some really rare progs not to work)

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > fix all those settings once and for all, at least uncheck hide exts for known file types

Tap shift many times > disable sticky keys > so it doesn't bother you when your in a game tapping shift many times in a row

Depending on the security situation you may want it to auto log in so that your progs will auto start up when you restart your comp: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... knox2.mspx

Adjust those power saving options below the screen saver options

Depending on your security situation you may want to block file and printer sharing on your firewall

Block Remote Assistance under firewall and control panel > system

http://www.zonelabs.com zone alarm or what ever more fine tuned firewall that is free out there, though it can be a hassle and cause some probs with certain programs

disable cd autorun http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018 , still need to get around to looking into non cdrom media

if you're extra pariniod you can go into your bios options and change the boot priority of your harddrive to be the highest so that someone can't just put in a cdrom and reboot your comp to execute code automaticly

Chipset Drivers
Video Drivers
then all other drivers
symantec corporate antivirus 10
Patch Windows
Set a strong password for both my user account and admin account, turn off fast user switching and welcome screens
XP Power Toys: Tweak UI, scientific calc, command prompt here, image resizer

Set Tweak UI to disable autorun for all drives a-z (this covers you from autoruns on removeable media *this is an absolute must if you are frequently given usb memory keys at tech conferences"
Set Tweaj UI to autologin

ATI Tool (configured to OC the shit outa my card when a 3d app runs, but underclock it severly when just running windows)

Firefox
Winamp
WinRAR
Security Task Manager

Optimizing/Tweaking Windows:
switch to classic start menu (no custom menus, show admin tools, unlock taskbar, unhide inactive icons)
reorganize start menus)

switch to windows classic theme, black background

use the system properties settings for perfomormance setting (kill the weak eye candy in windows)
manually set my swap file to 1 - 3 X physical ram for starting and max
set not to auto reboot (I'd rather get a bluescreen, that way if it crashes while im not in the room, I'll at least know it crashed)
Kill error reporting

Killl all non-essential services (there are quite a few sites online detailing what most of the standard services are used for, I basically kill everything I am not using at any given time. There used to be a really good site up *something like blackviper.com or something like that*, but I can't find it now)

use msconfig to kill all the other unecessary stuff from startup

Kill system restore

Kill indexing

set folder view settings, (view all files and extensions of all types, do not remember each folder's view settings, disable simple file sharing)

setup my scheduled backups

customize the start menu, quicklaunch bar and desktop (standard shortcuts: customized command prompt, notepad, sci calc, blah blah blah...)

Then I load my games and office type apps as I get around to playing or using them, usually only BF2, EE2, Office ms and open, photoshop, and antispyware ans secuirty software like peer gaurdian get intalled.
“Well I remember it as though it were a meal ago”...said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear what ever foreign matter had made its way into his mighty throat, many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down the cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine…Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator...Tommy the Cat had many a story to tell...but it was a rare occasion such as this, that he did...
