That was pretty fucking crazy when I first noticed that in the first game. I was crouching and looking down and was thinking, "What the hell are these legs doing here? Oh, they're mine. Cool. INNOVATION."

It made it easier to throw plasma grenades on your feet to get that extra jump boost.
