Mexico to decriminalize small amounts of drugs

Post by sys » Sat Apr 29, 2006 4:18 pm

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Mexico's Congress on Friday approved a bill decriminalizing possession of small quantities of marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and even heroin for personal use, prompting U.S. criticism that the measure could harm anti-drug efforts.

The only step remaining was the signature of President Vicente Fox, whose office indicated he would sign the bill, which Mexican officials hope will allow police to focus on large-scale trafficking operations rather than minor drug busts.

That doesn't sound like great logic. Legalize small and bring down the big...?

what is illogical about that?
it means that the system won't waste time and resources prosecuting the average drug user; it will only prosecute dealers.

If someone has a small amount, it's cool, the police won't bug him. That'll give the drug holder some trust by the police, which will encourage him to hide a much larger amount elsewhere, since the police won't have to search him.

well, another reason in the article for the law is that cops routinely bring in people with any amount of drugs and then release them when they are bribed

I bet burglaries will go up, though. You know, to get money for the stuff.

Do you guys know how much drug related violence there is in Mexico. In one of the cities (like Tiujana.. but even worse) the new head of police was appointed recently and assassinated within a couple of hours.

One of the big reasons they are doing this is to cut down on drug related violence.

The small vs. big deal? Never works.

Think about it:
(A bit of a different topic, but same concept)

If you can arrest someone for the possesion of a gun, then you have a reason to stop them from having the gun before they kill someone.

"Oh, yea you can have this AK until you shoot or kill someone with it"

I'm tired and it sounded better in my head, but I hope you get my point.
