Overviews (1.6)

I was trying to make an overview, so I followed Nipper's tutorial here. However, I didn't really understand it since after I typed dev_overview 2, took a snapshot, and typed dev_overview 1, there were no information popping on the console.
Did I miss something?

Yes you did. It was a post you made in the "CS 1.6 Mapping" sticky that VOlmarias made ages ago. It was a really detailed explanation because it helped me make an overview for one of my first public 1.6 maps.

In this link, http://www.cs-maps.jolt.co.uk/index.php ... erview.htm, it told me to
...Go to your half-life folder and you should find a .bmp file named similar to de_taliban0000.bmp (or whatever your map is named). Open up the file and copy the entire image. Then, close it and open a new document in Paint. Then copy the image into the new document and resize it so that it fits EXACTLY into the space provided. Then save it as de_taliban.bmp.
I don't really understand what it means about the resizing part... can someone explain it to me?

that's only if you use paint to edit overview screenshots.

just set your cs client resolution to 1024x768 before taking screenshot. when you have the screenshot image, convert it to either bmp or tga. if you use bmp, make sure it's in 8 bit, not 24 bit. you can use paint dot net or whatever image editor/converter that support saving bmp 8 bit

No wonder why... I was in widescreen mode. I'll try again thanks.

-Still doesn't work. Says same stuff. What do I have to do in paint to make it the right dimension?

Argh I need to bump this ancient thread.

I followed the tutorial that killer-duck gave me and something doesn't work. I typed "dev_overview 1" and the over view does not show up dammit. I tried using the values "-dev +map (mapname)" and "-dev (mapname)" and have set the resolution to 1024x768 in 16 bit. Still no work.
Another weird thing is that I can actually spawn in my map as a player with all triggers still functioning, because the last time I made the overview work, I entered the map as a spectator or some sort. Mighta gotten something wrong.

Oh yeah, can someone give me an alternate tutorial on overviews? Nipper's doesn't work (at least not for mentally challenged person like me), and the links at egir.dk, telling you to follow other tutorials on overviews, have all been "file not found"-ed.
