getting SPORE?

Post by joe » Fri Aug 15, 2008 9:10 am

it's at newegg now free shipping $47, which is probably the cheapest you'll find it.

i can't decide whether to get it but i'm leaning towards no.

PROS:
1. everyone will have it, it's going to sell millions of copies, so if there's any kind of friend/multiplayer/mod scene i will want to be in on it.
2. looks to be a high quality game
3. literally millions of user-created objects, almost infinite content
4. tons of ways to be creative - create creatures, create vehicles, create buildings, etc.

CONS:
1. it's basically just 5 minigames tied together, and i don't know how many times i will want to replay them over and over. after i do it once, i might never want to do it again.
2. i don't really want to create anything.
3. i don't really want a SIMSified RTS
4. user-created content is just a layer on top of the same mechanics and gameplay. i don't really care about flying a spaceship that looks like a penis or a spaceship that looks like homer simpson if the underlying game is the same.
5. the multiplayer from what i've heard is really fake multiplayer where you can attack someone's planet but the enemy is totally AI controlled.
6. i can probably play it for free via piratebay.
7. the announced DRM is incredibly bad (only 3 installs, forever).

thoughts? let's keep this about SPORE, not about how stupid i am for not wanting to buy it.

Well, I'm gonna get it.

It looks incredibly fun to play, I don't know why your analyzing it like that.

i'm analyzing it the same way i analyze any $50+ game.

i'm really surprised by the responses - i expected to be the only person that wasn't gung ho for spore but it looks like i'm in the majority, at least around here. i'm hoping for enough feedback that i can make a confident decision one way or the other

naw joe, when i first heard of spore i got really pumped up and excited, i watched videos on it and stuff.

in like may though i realized that it is pretty much a single player game, you just download other player's content, and that is a major turn off.

I do really want it. Just... theres other stuff out there I'd rather get.

And honestly I'll probably pirate it before I actually buy it, to make sure it's at least fun single player wise.

At school, single player games are nice for me to have, since our internet sucks.

We already have a Spore thread and we could have easily forgone the whole "Hey guys, should I buy this game I'm quite obviously not going to enjoy" that you shoehorned into the beginning of this thread, especially since we're evidently not allowed to talk about THAT portion.
Cripes, just "PirateBay" it or whatever and try it out, and see if it's worth paying money for, it's not a big deal.

I've cooled on it considerably, since it's taken so fucking goddamned long to get released, but I'll probably still get it. Like Majin said, there's just other stuff I want a lot more at this point. I do have the creature creator and that's quite a bit of fun, even on its own.

I'm not very excited for this game anymore and probably won't purchase it.
