Wii = pirate paradise

Post by joe » Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:49 pm

so i figured out 2 things this weekend:

a) you can use wad manager and download wads on piratebay and get wiiware for free

b) you can use the leaked iso loader to play burned DVD copies of wii games (although read speed is locked to 3x so loading times are long and some cinematics skip).

this. is. awesome.

I don't have the homebrew channel or any custom firmware installed yet (scared that my console will get bricked in some kind of sneaky update) and I don't want to have to buy modchips or do physical modding (soldering and such).

Recently an app was released that allowed you to playback DVD movies on the Wii (via homebrew channel), and with the new loader that don't require modchips, I'm considering getting it. The downside to the DVD media player is that supposedly the laser wasn't built for continuous long-term reading or something, and that repeated use for playing DVDs would eventually damage the laser (supposedly).

you can't damage a laser from reading dvd's any more than you can damage a window by looking through it...

anyway it's working fine. there is a known limitation that burned games have a 3x max read speed which means 2x longer load times but if you can put up with that, it's quite nice.

I wear these special glasses - they're reinforced, so I don't hurt anyone. Shutting my eyes used to be rough, but I got used to it.

meh, everyone hates cyclops anyway, acts like a dick

and erm, a lamp can die from leaving it on for too long, don't see why a laser wouldn't.
it might not shaft it, but it might shorten it's life span

so far i've tried about 10 games. some of them are ok, some aren't.

wario shake it - very long cutscene at the start takes about 20 minutes to get through before you can play, and i think it crashes when you finish the first level. only tried it once, it's a shitty game anyway

chocobo dungeon - another very long cutscene, probably 3 minutes real-time but takes 10 minutes to sit through because of slow dvd read speed on burned disks. the game is very meh to boot

samba de amigo - no cutscenes, not much load times anywhere, but it doesn't seem to read the motion detection well at all, especially with the nunchuk. you have to hold it at a certain angle and shake it like a maraca and it didn't register the angle or shake about half the time. shitty game.

dance dance revolution - hottest party #2 - fine, if you like ddr. i got it for someone else. it's exactly like hottest party #1 except slightly better dancer animations due to mocap, and of course different music.

the trend i'm seeing is that except for wario shake it, the burned games work fine but often aren't even worth the 40 cents for a blank dvd. there's not too many wii games i'm really excited about actually.

next on my list:
scarface
no more heroes
furu furu park
rock band (i'll get a used guitar on ebay for $20)

update, new version of the loader coming out 0.3

MUCH faster, watch this video
http://www.veoh.com/videos/v16290942FhfBbDSy

also seems to solve the fmv skipping which makes a lot of games unplayable.

and also note that world of goo and tetris party wads are on pirate bay, about 40MB each, so you can download them in seconds and put them on your wii with wad manager
