custom maps in infancy (wait a couple years)
custom map scripting limit

This is optional.

For the campaign yes. Multiplayer will have access to all the races.

You have no idea the power behind their custom maps/scripting. I sat through a 2 hours panel at Blizzcon 2009 and the things you can do with the Galaxy Map Editor is insane.

no chat rooms/making new friends except during game
Honestly the only thing I ever saw chat rooms used for on Bnet was trading in diablo 2, or spamming porn sites/ hax sites, or just lame ass join my clan messages.
Because, since you don't know me, there is a great possibility that I'm on an higher intellectuel level then you are on.

not from what i've read. you will be able to play multiplayer only with the people who bought the same game as you - terran can play all races but only with other terran-only-purchase players, and so on.

i'll believe it when i see it

i'm totally familiar with the power of their engine. i didn't click your link because i probably saw it 2 years ago - it has a shmup made out of their enginer. that's great but that's irrelevant to my point - their announced limitations on map scripting. the widespread assumption is this is because blizzard now hosts every game of every map. they don't use listen servers or peer to peer connections any more. so they had to put a cap on scripting in custom maps to protect their servers from getting blown out by complex maps.
Spazmeister wrote:You can probably modify this
it's part of the blizzard map hosting user agreement, i doubt you can modify how their servers work.

let's debate the game in another thread, please. i just started this thread to provide download links with a summary of why/why not to use them, in case anyone visiting this thread was unfamiliar with the details of the game

They took all censoring off (via a check box) in a later beta build, it's now just like other game's mature language filter, just turn it off in the options.

You will be able to play with people who buy the other games (heart of the swarm and w/e the protoss one is) and besides they won't be out until next year.

The engine will not be bottlenecked by the blizzard servers, they have promised full support for extremely powerful game scripts and any kind of game.

I have a theory that within a year they will patch LAN and host-computers back in (as it always has been) because the blizzard servers will not be able to keep up, they might say they are insanely good but as soon as you have full-fledged maps being played 24/7 by 10+ different groups, blizzard will start to lose money just from sheer server upkeep then they will have no choice but give us private servers (because they will lose 90% of their user base if they do monthly fees).

Right now SC2 is HUGELY experimental and very subject to change, blizzard is doing lots of things no one has ever done before.

This was reasonable thing to be scared about for awhile, but at this point Blizzard has backed down from making this mandatory for posting on their forums so now it's not a real big deal, RealID friends are optional unless you want to interface with WoW. And Maybe Diablo 3 when that comes out, but maybe they will actually get their heads out of their asses by that time.
no LAN
Yet, Korea demands a lan version so there will probably a lan client available at some point down the road
only 1 of 3 races - be prepared to spend another $120 for the whole game
Blizzard has stated repeatedly that the other 2 games will be priced as expansions
no cross-region play
They are adding this later on in a patch. This was a big problem for competitive players who need to be able to play in all regions, and Blizzard's first response to this was basically a gigantic 'fuck you' but they've backed down and are supposedly going to address this issue
no chat rooms/making new friends except during game
Chat rooms are coming in a later patch, friend system is pretty backwards but Blizzard says they have been working on making it more usable. I honestly doubt the friends system will be much better than it was in the beta but we will eventually get chat channels
custom maps in infancy (wait a couple years)
I see no reason why people shouldn't be porting their wc3 maps over to Sc2, although I was surprised at how little maps ended up being played in the beta. I hope blizzard rethinks the custom game system for SC2 because I think it kind of discourages map making since only the most popular maps will be played frequently
custom map scripting limit
Eh, not reeeaaaly, the big problems with custom maps are the size limit on the files and the fact that one person can only upload 3 maps. Those suck.
custom map censorship (rudeness, language, etc.)
Yeah this is pretty stupid, some guy ported a famous SC1 map called "God's Garden" and he had to change the name
facebook integration
A really stupid decision by Blizzard to try to bring their games into the new decade that's completely optional

that's not the censoring i'm talking about - they have in their EULA that you're not allowed to upload custom maps with offensive or copyrighted content or language among other things
and they have repeatedly said you WON'T be able to play with people who buy the other games.
and there IS a scripting limit on custom maps
and your theory is great but the fact is the game is out today without either of those things.

if you've got info different from mine please post links because i'd like to know if it changes but my info is based off forum posts by blizzard employees from late in the beta

What a dealbreaker
and they have repeatedly said you WON'T be able to play with people who buy the other games.
It's likely to work exactly like brood war or frozen throne or lords of destruction or any other blizzard expansion ever. If you are going to play the expansion you need the expansion content
and there IS a scripting limit on custom maps
I've never heard of any kind of scripting limit or how that would work, but 99.9% of maps in warcraft 3 didn't even use custom scripts at all and the map that was most notable for scripting was Dota which Blizzard has definitely planned for in the Sc2 editor

I only played SC1 for User Map Settings and I KNOW I will only play SC2 for user map settings. So I'm gonna wait later in the year for an awesome deal on SC2 when there's custom maps and the game is on sale.

I'll pirate it to play the campaign. And when I can afford it later in the year I'll buy it.

You theoretically don't even need to pirate it to play the campaign. Install the "digital version" client (free to download and install), then open the galaxy editor. Open the campaign maps, then hit "test map" (ctrl-f9 or something). It'll boot up SC2 with your selected map. All this can be done without actually buying the game, and all you need is a valid bnet account (so you can download the client).

Granted, you probably won't have any of the skill tree or customization stuff, but if you just want to play through the campaign for the story or whatever, this is a good way to do it.

And if you like what you see, then you can buy a license online (or run out and buy a boxed set) and associate it with your bnet account. Try before you buy, right?
