I mean this in the nicest way possible...
Nipper, WTF?
You are arguably the most prolific non-industry map maker of all time. Why are you not in the industry? It seems like a job in game design would be a slam dunk for you. Have you sought a game design job? Do you believe game companies are evil? Where do you currently work?
Sorry, I don't mean to pry but based on history it seems as though you really like mapping and because of your talent I can't think of anyone more deserving of a game design job than you. Just curious...

Did someone tell you that or did you come to that conclusion on your own? As far as creating content for one of the most popular FPS games ever, you are the king. Valve probably owes you thousands of dollars for the value added content you provided to the end users of their game. Your vision, creativity and productivity is unmatched. In my humble opinion, any game company would be crazy to not want you as part of their team.
You've been approaching mapping in a very professional way for years. The reason your maps have been so popular is because you give players what they want. Nothing more and nothing less. If you were a terrible mapper, then no one would want to play your maps and no one would know your name.
I think that a team of modellers, animators and texture artists around you would only enhance what you bring to the table. Also you could easily pick up the latest techniques you need from the team. But, being a professional mapper might not be up your alley. Maybe you wouldn't have enough creative freedom and maybe you don't want to be told what to map.
However, if you have ever wanted this to be your profession, I hope for your sake you have at least tried. I'm certain there is a good fit for you somewhere. Just my .02.

I'm currently at college on an actual games designs media course, and from my view, you have much more talent than anyone I have ever come across.

putting a lot of fancy textures and models in a map to make it look amazing is about 1% as important as actually having cool ideas and cranking them out.
and he doesn't just make maps, he's made movies and other stuff too. he's prodigiously creative and talented. i've always thought nipper had a huge future in the tech or even showbiz world but he didn't believe me.

I probably wouldn't change anything, they seem to have a good handle on things.
OR
I'd make the ultimate GIJoe first person shooter!
And CS2 featuring NO SNIPERS.
