Amazing Sourcemod - The Stanley Parable

Post by Haymakers9th » Thu Aug 04, 2011 2:25 am

Mod DB link (for the best experience, download the game without reading too much about what it's about, the genius of the game relies on you finding things out for yourself)
^ download here, extract to your sourcemods folder/restart steam etc

Reddit topic by author (again, read the comments and stuff from the developer after you play through it)

(and if this topic gets popular, don't read through it till you try the mod. It's short enough to play through a few times real fast before reading about it)
Author on Mod DB wrote:The Stanley Parable is an experimental narrative-driven first person game. It is an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality, all examined through the lens of what it means to play a video game.

You will make a choice that does not matter

You will follow a story that has no end

You will play a game you cannot win

...it's actually best if you don't know anything about it before you play it :D
I loved it, the story was well written, well spoken, and caught me off guard. It's definitely more artistic than most of the games you see nowadays. As I said above, it's pretty short so you won't lose much time trying it out.

Pretty much the best mod I've played in a while, fantastic execution of a wonderful, unconventional idea.

This isn't really a spoiler, so I'll share that officially there are 6 endings. I really, really enjoyed this mod. This thread should probably be in another section just so it can get more notice :(

I downloaded this, then realized I don't have HL2 installed. And I don't really feel like installing it.

You don't need HL2. Get Source SDK Base 2007, which is all you need.

I was hoping everyone would be looking at search_id=newposts

This was one of the few game narratives to actually emotionally engage me, like that I'm really immersed and interested and something catches me off guard. I loved it.

what really got me was when it got meta - the giant room with skybox and orange-dev textures, the hole in the bottom of the hl2 level, when he says you're questioning why the doors are closing behind you, why you can't see your feet, and why there's a voice in your head telling you what to do[/spoilers]

my favorite ending was the girl who took over narration and you walk through all the props in the hallway as she tells you how the narrator really doesn't have any more control than you do, but then it returns you to the room where you get smashed but she's frantically telling you that you have the power because YOU CAN JUST HIT ESCAPE AND CLICK EXIT GAME DO IT NOW OH GOD

the really great voice acting helped all of everything tremendously though.

I loved doing the opposite of what the voice told me.

Also if you go to the generator room and you turn the generator on, does anybody know if you can turn it off because I always get esploded.

not after it's on, just you can turn it off in the first place and get the ending the narrator intended - it was cool how there was no happy end to that situation after it's turned on and he put in those buttons with the lightbulbs to make you THINK you're able to do something if you just get it in the right order - but it's futile - and it gets great when he basically describes what you're doing as you do it "you're just running around hitting buttons hoping you can shut it off, aren't you?"

Installing now sounds amazing to me
Mbaxter - Your signature has been murdered mercilessly

Neelpos - I'm now expecting blip to accidentally construct a nonstop minecart that transports lava to every major forest on MC2
MrBlip - You absolutely know I'll find some fucking way to do that.

MJCS - If this was MC4 it is all Kosher.

Mbaxter - You seem silly. :)
