Super Monday Night Combat

Post by Avvatar » Thu Feb 09, 2012 11:51 am

UPDATE
It's been released. There's a video to teach you a bit about it on Steam:
http://store.steampowered.com/video/104700/81582
---

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and call it a MOBA. And it's awesome.

It plays out like any other MOBA: 5v5, a few lanes, bots pushing, farming, ganking, leveling up. But, it does all this with a third person perspective. It plays far more shooter-y than other MOBAs. Most abilities have to be aimed and of course your "auto-attacks" have to be aimed. The game already has several arenas and multiple Pros of each job-type allowing you to find one you like.

It's adopted League of Legends monetization scheme almost verbatim.
  • You earn credits for playing
You can unlock Pros (characters) with credits or with cash
You can unlock skins and fancy taunts with cash
You can unlock Endorsements (think LoL Runes) and Products (think LoL summoner spells, but far less powerful) with credits
You unlock more endorsement slots by leveling up your account
It does have a few issues. The Endorsements and Products after a rather substantial advantage to the players who have them. And the costs tend to be ridiculously high to create a long-term replayability. So it will be a while before you have a decent set. The game seems to lack intelligent matchmaking. It simply groups up 10 players, regardless of skill level. Though with the small player base it has in beta this is probably preferable to waiting for it to find a decent match-up. So you're occasionally going to run into the people who have been playing for forever and get unfairly wrecked.

That said, the game is still a blast and will be free to play when it is released. In the meantime, you should sign up for the beta.

And, if you missed it in the video, the game contains ROBO-KITTEN OVERLORDS:

Bit of gameplay information I typed up but felt didn't fit in that post. And am too lazy to format for readability. And is woefully inadequate for anything and probably should have remained unposted:

As you level up you can put points into either one of your Pro's three abilities or you can passively increase their offense or defense. You can assign a maximum of 3 points to any of them. Each starts at level one, meaning a max of level 4. You start able to use all of your Pro's abilities. Whenever a bot is killed, it drops coins on the ground. Running over these coins collects them for in-game currency. The in-game currency can be used to spawn more pushing bots, some special "gank" bots, or to activate various features around the map: ejector pads which toss anything on them out of the arena, jump pads which grant access to other areas, "The Annihilator" which destroys enemy bots and damages enemy Pros. All of the map activatables have a decent cooldown aside from the jump pads. Each map also has a "jungle" region which offers alternate paths across the map and contains neutral bots which can be farmed for experience/money. The goal of the game is to assist your bots in pushing a lane, destroying the towers in that lane, and finally destroying your opponents "Money Ball" to win.

This is really terrible currently. No controls documentation in-game because it

1) Doesn't list bound key, just a list of all things you can do in game, making you have to click each one
2) Clicking results in a debug menu item.

So I joined a game with no idea how to do anything but shoot, and just repeatedly fed the other team because no matter what I did I couldn't kill anything.

Clicking results in a debug menu?

I agree that the having-to-bind-all-the-keys-first thing sort of sucked. But there was no debug menu. I just bound the keys and played the game.

Not terribly. I assume the beta is small. Seems like theres ~500 people on when I play. Finding a match takes a minute or two.

Also, try it again:

Code: Select all

Fixed issues with changing key bindings during matches.

I'm interested. Do you need to have registered for beta access to play?
