Mojang, creators of block-building game Minecraft, have been purchased by Microsoft for a cool 2.5 billion dollars.
In a post on the official Mojang blog, Chief Word Officer Owen Hill stated that "Yes, the deal is real." Hill went on to state that the three founders, Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving the company to work on different projects. He also wanted to assure users that "Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development." Many have speculated that the purchase is to help boost Windows Phone sales.
All points aside, I am really happy for Notch and the rest of the Mojang employees, they got really lucky with a cool idea. The success of this game can also be attributed in no small part to the great communities of players and developers (such as ourselves) who were given free reign to expand on the basic ideas of the game. I personally saw Minecraft as more of a medium, a platform for individuals and groups to create unique experiences. I am unsure of what Microsoft will do with this game, but I certainly enjoyed playing it for the last couple of years.
