CS:S ambient_generic problem

I can't get an ambient_generic to play, at all, even if I use a logic_auto with OnMapSpawn or with a trigger_once, or any number of other things I've tried. No error shows in the console, and google hasn't yielded useful results. Any ideas? I've been told to use env_soundscape, but that doesn't allow you to actually use a particular sound - you have to select an ambient from a list.
