Don't forget, the had delivered LITERALLY NOTHING that they said would be in the update. (Which were as Follows: New Map, New Weapons with unique stats, AND NO NEW COSMETICS)

Can't we assume they called it quits (valve) by this point

I thought the whole point of the update originally focused around McVee's SFM.
Everything else seemed to be speculation, unofficially announced and additional content.

That would be correct, if McVee had not said that there would be new weapons and no new cosmetics. Even if there was never going to be new weps ever, why would Valve LET HIM SAY THAT. Plus still, no new map.

Also, the video is really just a commercial for the update at this point. The point of the update was to make new weapons (with unique stats), and a new map based on things from the video. We got NEITHER OF THOSE. We got a bunch of (rather shitty) cosmetics, a HORRIBLY disappointing reskin and a (meh) new taunt.

They didn't let him say it, they told him to say it. I pointed that out in the other thread. Valve told him to tell everyone what they wanted to do for the update. Not what was done.

From what I've seen, nothing conclusively says they were coerced into misleading. My impression is that, when they asked Valve what they could say about the update, they were told to go ahead and discuss what they'd like to see but not to reveal the internal planning (aka exact details about what's getting in)
