I don't think anyone expected anything serious, they were just hoping for something actually fun...and preferably not outright stupid...like ducks.

The ducks were weird, but a cool integration of the EotL movie. And we had Ducks back in the event map.
I wear a Duck Journal proudly[in the silliest way of saying proudly] while going into TF2 both on the custom map server, and when I do Highlander lobbies/scrims (would say matches but it is off-season currently).

Just figured out the duck journals are usable (instead of just cosmetic action slot), and it is a noise maker on top of whatever it does. And works while dead too.

god the duck journals are so stupid. don't get me wrong, the video is fantastic and amazingly well done. But valve, valve c'mon. an event you can't even take part in without paying $5? wtf. also, no cp_snowplow

Just read a Tinfoil of a post from Reddit and the guy make a theory that the Duck Journal is just Valve testing the possibility of using it for the future matchmaking feature.
