If you are a linux user like me, you need to be aware of this this virus that is going around on Steam. The virus is only effecting linux users.

The virus will install itself and everything looks fine to you, but it is not. Once the virus is installed it will start wiping out you entire hard drive.

Thank goodness that I am dual booting my computer, so that I do not have to worry about this.

This is just a heads up. If you want to learn more about the virus the link above.

I read a article about this yesterday. This isn't actually a virus, but a bug in steam's script with a rampant rm -rf command. I only use linux at work, but from what i have read it only seems to effect users when they mv steam into another directory.

The real question is why squirrel is dual booting into linux to use steam over just using it in windows.

Well, for one thing if you're using OpenGL and an Nvidia card you actually get better performance on Linux than you would on windows.

Not the best test in the world, I'll admit. However, as the hardware and OS landscape expands with the introduction of new hardware and operating systems (namely Atom/Atom-like processors, graphics technology such as Tegra etc, iOS and Android) OpenGL is becoming more popular and important. Steam for Linux has been an important step in improving technology and performance on non-directX systems.

And yes, I do game on Windows. Just saying.

Looks like a permissions issue in addition to a poor system of checks for files/folder. This is not a Virus since it isn't self replicating software running without user permission, this is just a faulty design which will likely be fixed in a short amount of time. A simple check for the steam folder and or system variable would rectify the issue, or not allowing steam to have root permission, though it would likely still have permission to delete the user folder without a separate steam system account.

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened before. Many years back the Eve Online launcher would delete boot.ini if the install was in a non default location.

Just today, I wrote "For a good time, type rm -rf ~/*" on the whiteboard of CS lab, just to see how many naive freshmen I could get to wipe their directory. Fun times.
